Center for Theatre Arts offers theatre, dance, and vocal classes for students age three through senior citizens. Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned performer, we have a class designed for you.

CTA classes are in session except for USD 305 fall, winter, and spring breaks. In 2016-17, USD 305 is not in session on the dates below and so CTA will be closed:

Labor Day: September 5
Fall Break: November 21-25
Winter Break: December 21-January 1
Spring Break: March 20-26

CTA classes take place as scheduled on inservice days or parent teacher conferences. For class cancellations due to weather, please call the Theatre at 785.827.6126.

Students will be initially placed at a level based on age and academic grade. Each teacher will evaluate students on ability and experience, and determine appropriate class level. Minimum class size is 6.

TUITION
$40 per month for a weekly 1 hour class

$50 per month for a weekly 1-1/2 hour class
$60 per month for a weekly 2 hour class

10% discount for individual students taking 2 classes in different departments; 15% discount for any 3 classes.

CREATIVE DRAMA  Ages 4-5
THURSDAY 4:30-5:30pm
Picture books will serve as the spring-board, as the students dive into a theatrical adventure, that will give the students the opportunity to play, using basic acting skills, all while working as a team to bring stories to life! We exercise their natural creativity through movement, projection, improvisation, and finally memorization. Children portray storybook characters while gaining confidence and stage presence. The final product of this course will be a short staged story presented at CTA CenterStage.

BALLET & TAP  Ages 3-4
TUESDAY 4:30-5:30pm
A delightful and fun introduction to ballet and tap using age appropriate music. Little dancers will explore dance space, create characters, and learn safe and suitable exercises to improve motor skills and musicality.

BALLET, TAP & JAZZ  Ages 5-6
TUESDAY 5:30-6:30pm | THURSDAY 4:30-5:30pm
Students will work with pre-ballet class structure learning dance vocabulary and moves to appropriate music. Tap and jazz introduces basic dance steps, teaching the young student the terminology, dancing to different styles of music.

GRADES 1-4

We encourage your children to take cross disciplinary courses. Vocal and Acting classes of the same age group also collaborate performances for CTA CenterStage.

ACTING  Grades 1 & 2
WEDNESDAY 5:30-6:30pm (1st Grade) | TUESDAY 4:00-5:00pm (2nd Grade)
Popular stories adapted for the stage. The basics of drama as a story will help introduce young children to the idea that stage and story are the same thing. A short story is the final product of this class, and will be performed at CTA CenterStage.

ACTING  Grades 3 & 4
MONDAY 4:30-5:30pm (3rd Grade) | THURSDAY 4:30-5:30pm (4th Grade)
This fundamental acting class will help young actors learn the terms and fundamentals of performing. This class includes stage directions, projection, memorizing a script, and basic intentions. Short scenes will be produced by this class for CTA CenterStage.

VOCAL  Grades K-4
WEDNESDAY 4:30-5:30pm (K-1st Grade) | TUESDAY 5:00-6:00pm (2nd Grade) | MONDAY 5:30-6:30pm (3rd Grade) | THURSDAY 5:30-6:30pm (4th Grade)
This class combines high energy music that kids crave, along with the tools they will need to perform in upcoming productions. Students will learn to become expressive singers through dynamics, phrasing, and interpretation. They will begin to learn basic music notation, including key signatures and musical terminology. They will also begin to learn appropriate ways of evaluating song and performance.

BALLET, TAP & JAZZ  Grades 1-2
MONDAY 4:30-6:00pm | THURSDAY 4:30-6:00PM
This class is for the student who loves to dance and is ready to sparkle. It will focus on basic ballet barre and center movement. Tap will include basic tap steps, introduce new steps as well as working with different tempos while improving musicality. Jazz will continue with upbeat music and basic jazz movement.

BALLET, TAP & JAZZ  Grades 3-4
TUESDAY 5:30-7:00pm | THURSDAY 6:00-7:30pm
The audience will be mesmerized as the students continue their training with a focus on technique, vocabulary, and progressions with a growing variety of musical styles. Ballet will focus on strengthening technique, improving balance and flexibility, and learning connecting steps and basic turns. Tap will focus on clarity of tap sounds, learning a basic time step, tap turns, and progressive combinations. Jazz will build on skills developed in previous classes and continue to familiarize students with dance terminology.

GRADES 5-6

TAP & JAZZ  Grades 5 & up
WEDNESDAY 4:30-6:00pm
This class builds on the foundation of previous tap and jazz classes, with an emphasis on more complex tap and jazz movements. This class is for dancers who are ready for more challenging tap and jazz choreography.

BEGINNING BALLET  Grades 5 & up
WEDNESDAY 6:00-7:00pm
This class builds on the foundation from earlier combination classes. With a full hour devoted to ballet, the student can enjoy building their vocabulary, while improving balance and flexibility, and strengthening turn out through barre, center, and progressive combinations.

INTERMEDIATE VOCAL  Grades 5-6
THURSDAY 4:30-5:30pm
Both stage and screen are full of musical numbers for children young and old. This class will feature music appropriate for this age group. We will develop our knowledge of basic music terminology and begin to develop a solid audition piece.

INTERMEDIATE ACTING  Grades 5-6
THURSDAY 5:30-6:30pm
This class builds on the ideas taught in beginning acting, while continuing to educate these young performers. At this level, the kids begin to work on obstacles, beginning audition techniques, further exploration of goals, intentions, and choices. Final scenes will be presented at CTA CenterStage.

GRADES 7-12

ADVANCED ACTING  Grades 7-12 / Instructor permission
WEDNESDAY 4:30-5:30pm
At this level, students learn specifics about acting and audition technique, while continuing to improve physical and vocal character development. They also begin to understand goals, obstacles, and line-linkage. First semester focuses on improv and scene work, as well as preparing monologues to be used in CTA auditions. The second semester students prepare scenes for CTA CenterStage.

ADVANCED VOCAL   Grades 7-12 / Instructor permission
WEDNESDAY 5:30-6:30pm
Developing voices need a challenge. Whether your goal is to be the next American Idol, Broadway star, or just to be the best shower singer, this class is a vital tool to help you reach that goal. We’ll teach you the necessary music terminology, build rehearsal skills, and develop a solid audition piece.

AGES 12 & UP

BALLET I-II  Instructor permission
MONDAY 6:00-7:00pm
This class is for the student who has previously studied ballet and has knowledge of ballet class, structure, and technique. Class consists of barre, center work, and grande allegro.

TAP II-III  Instructor Permission
MONDAY 6:30-7:30pm
This class continues to build skills with a strong foundation in technique. Mastery of basic time steps, pull backs, riffs, and buffalos should be achieved at this level. Students learn blocks of combinations to build and strengthen coordination and fine motor skills of feet and ankles.

MUSICAL THEATRE JAZZ I-II  Ages 12-14
TUESDAY 5:30-6:30pm
This class is for students with some experience in dance or theatre performance. Class consists of warm up, stretches, progressions, and center work with blocks of choreography from a variety of musical theatre styles.

TAP I-II  Instructor Permission
TUESDAY 6:30-7:30pm
This class is for students from entry level up through 1-2 years of class. Dancers review basic tap fundamentals, technique, and start putting together basic steps into more complex combinations. Focus is on building a strong technical foundation for application in musical theatre and performance.

CONTEMPORARY II  Ages 14 & up / Instructor Permission
WEDNESDAY 7:00-8:00pm
This class is NOT for beginners, teacher permission is required. This class covers a combination of modern and contemporary techniques. Students learn how to release into the floor, while pushing against it for stability. They work on head-to-tail connectivity, fluidity of movement, and increase strength and flexibility. Throughout the entire class students work on full body awareness. The curriculum for this class allows experienced dancers to continue the growth of their dance education.

BALLET II-III  Instructor Permission
WEDNESDAY 5:30-7:00pm
This class is for the student who has previously studied ballet and has knowledge of ballet class, structure, and technique. Class consists of barre, center work, and grande allegro.

MUSICAL THEATRE JAZZ II-III  Instructor Permission

This class is for students with experience in dance or theatre performance. Class consists of warm up, stretches, progressions, and center work with blocks of choreography from a variety of musical theatre styles with jazz technique.

PRE-POINTE/POINTE  Instructor Permission

In this advanced ballet class students work with pointe shoes, at the barre and center. Previous and concurrent ballet classes required.

IRON STREET DANCE COMPANY

ADULT

ADULT JAZZ I-II  Beginner

Specifically designed for adults with little or no experience in dance or theatre performance. Class will consist of warm up, stretches, progressions, and center work with blocks of fun, simple choreography set to contemporary music using jazz technique.

ADULT TAP  Beginner
TUESDAY 7:00-8:00pm
Come learn and more with other adults who have a wonderful time, all while reaping the health benefits of tap dancing! This is a fun, beginning-level class just for “grown-ups.”
