As part of our mission to present new plays with issue driven subjects, Salina Community Theatre will present a staged reading of Nora Ephron’s play Love, Loss, and What I Wore. The presentation of this funny and evocative play will take place July 22, 23, and 24 in the Sunflower Financial Theatre.
This is a play of monologues and ensemble pieces about women, clothes, and memory covering all the important subjects—mothers, prom dresses, mothers, buying bras, mothers, hating purses, and an affinity for wearing black. Love, Loss, and What I Wore is based on the bestselling book by Ilene Beckerman.
The New York Times called this play “Funny, compelling…brought down the house…but [the play] is not a comedy: A story about black cowboy boots becomes a sad tale of being underappreciated in a relationship; a tale of two women shopping for their wedding outfits ends bittersweetly; and the recollection of a new bra is a quiet testament to a women’s search for dignity while undergoing treatment for breast cancer.”
Director Michael Spicer will cast five women for a two-week rehearsal period before the performances. “Plays that present this level of resonance are rare, important, and necessary, especially at times like this. Having grown up in a house with five women, I witnessed a lot of these events first-hand,” said Spicer.
